Abstract

All over the world, women are a strong force for growth and development, making important contributions to the economy as well as playing a major role in the welfare of the family. However, cultural hindrances at the workplace do not allow for flexibility for the working woman and mother who still remains the primary caregiver in the home and society.

Description

The Kenyan government has pushed employers to the extent of creating laws, to provide a suitable working environment for pregnant women and mothers at the workplace. This is so because of the acknowledgement that three quarters of the women entering the workforce will be pregnant and at the same time employed at some point. 2 The increase in charges against pregnant women and mothers at the workplace in the courts by 35%, a fifth of them being pregnancy discrimination cases, has also contributed to the push.
