Violence against women has continued to be the most widespread and socially tolerated human right infringement. This Gender based violence stems from structural inequalities between men and women. 1 In the 1993 UN Declaration on the Elimination of Violence against Women, it was set out that an act of violence results from physical, sexual or psychological harm or suffering to women, including threats of such acts, coercion or arbitrary deprivation of liberty, whether occurring in public or in private life.en_US
