- ItemManagement information system framework for juvenile justice system in Kenya : a case study for children service department Nairobi(Strathmore University, 2012) Kounah, Carolyne AtienoThe purpose of this study was to investigate the impact of Management Information System (MIS) on Children Service Department: the focus being on Juvenile Justice Supervision. The research objectives were; to identify existing Management Information Systems adopted by Children Service Department in Juvenile Justice Supervision, to establish the challenges faced in adoption of MIS and to propose framework for MIS development that will assist the Kenyan Government in Juvenile Justice Supervision. The study used the case study research design .The data was obtained analysed using descriptive and inferential statistical analysis.The first phase involved interviewing the middle management of the Children’s Service Department in Nairobi to identify the existing Management Information Systems used in gathering, storing , transmitting data and aid in decision making. The second phase involved content analysis of writings from Department of Children Service publications. Findings of the study revealed the following challenges or impediments to adoption of MIS for JJ supervision: lack of Information Technology (IT) platform, lack of ICT infrastructure and lack of information on potentials of MIS. The study recommends that the key players in MIS framework should include organization, technology, people, external partners and policies. They are to work together to create an Information System solution that addresses the challenges experienced by Children Service Department in Juvenile Justice Supervision.
- ItemAn information management framework for development agencies(Strathmore University, 2012) Musyoka, Betty KavuthaModern organizations face the challenge of accessing information that is relevant for development and sustainability. A key impediment for most organizations is sifting through large amounts of data to extract required information. Studies show that modern organizations geared towards development find it difficult to access and learn from information provided through previous projects conducted for/by the institutions. This study investigates the efficacy of incorporating data mining techniques into information and knowledge management to improve the quality of information used by organizations. Effective Information and Knowledge management practices are important for business growth and diversity, since they provide platforms through which managers can make competent decisions based on stored information. The study introduces a suggested information management framework that incorporates automated storage, access, and analysis of data to improve information and knowledge within organizations. This will translate to overall development in organizations processes.

Existing mobile service business models have concentrated on markets that are more interested in using the mobile phone as a platform for entertainment such as music, games, movies, and television The purpose of this research is to establish a link between mobile applications innovation and entrepreneurial opportunities.As the whole research of mobile application entrepreneurship is relatively new and the impacts are wide reaching, a model framework of the research was needed. The aim was to widen the theoretical discussion and theory formulation concerning the link between mobile application innovation and entrepreneurship opportunities. The purpose was also to examine the drivers for mobile applications innovations, factors for mobile application entrepreneurship and the challenges in linking the mobile applications innovations to entrepreneurship opportunities. The primary data of the study are interviews of 10 organizations that dealt with mobile applications development. The research is descriptive in nature as it explains the situation in the industry as is. This research widened understanding mobile application entrepreneurship in Kenya. It was found that market needs was the most important driver for mobile application innovation in Kenya, while a thorough understanding of the industry was the most important factor for mobile application entrepreneurship in Kenya.
- ItemAn Assessment of the audit trail in pension management information systems :a case study of the pension department(Strathmore University, 2012) Mboni, Alphaxard KyaloThe purpose of this study was to assess the existing Audit Trail Model of the Pension Management Information System (PMIS), in the Pensions Department of the Ministry of Finance, Kenya, to track the processing of pension claims. The study assessed the weakness of existing Audit Trail model in use, identify and propose Audit Trail model that will address the needs of PM IS and identify ways of improving the use of Audit Trail. The study was a purposive targeting the key informants; Pension Directors, PMIS Administrators, Pension Accountants, and Pension Clerks dealing with the PMIS in various units. The Retirees were reached through snow ball technique. Both quantitative and qualitative data collection techniques were used; secondary data collection was also used through existing newsletters, office memos, text books and journals. Quantitative data from questionnaires was analyzed and interpreted with the help of the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS). Qualitative analysis was undertaken through summarizing, categorization and structuring of meaning by drawing relationships in the study results of the Audit Trail model. The study found that the Audit Trail in the PMIS does not keep a chronological record of events; information captured is scanty and can not help Pensions Directors make informed decisions. Further, the study found that the purpose of the Audit Trail in the PMIS as used by the Pension Management is only for security reasons and tracking the whereabouts of a particular file. On the basis of information gathered during the research a more appropriate Audit Trail Model is proposed. The research also provided a foundation for future research on the Audit Trail in Pension Systems of developing countries and on Pension Systems policies. The conclusions and recommendations on the model of Audit Trail provide the Government, development partners, consultants, retirees and other stakeholders with a clear idea of the contribution it can make, and how it can assist in prioritization, planning of resource allocation in the Pension Department and toward realizing vision 2030.
- ItemA framework for developing in-house software applications in the Kenyan Civil Service(2013-11-13) Opondo, Omukuyia J.This research set out to investigate and propose a framework that can be used to develop software applications in-house in the Kenyan civil service. The main focus was how the key players (software applications development champions), the technical environment under which the applications are developed and the organizational context under which the development takes place. The research identifies a framework that will ensure that the development of software applications in the civil service achieves their intended objectives. The research identified the people whose support and input is critical for any in-house software applications development in the civil service is to have an impact, the technical considerations and the organizational issues that must be taken into consideration. The research noted that the various initiatives to embrace information and communication technology (ICT) in the civil service have been driven by the realization of the potential that ICT can have on positively transforming service delivery. The information gathered from existing software applications development practices was used to develop a framework that will ensure continuing efforts to develop applications will guarantee that they serve the intended purpose.
- ItemA Framework for Optimizing Adoption of ICT Tools by Health Focused NGOs in Kenya.(2013-11-13) Baru, John W.The extent of lCT use in health- focused NGOs has been on the increase in the last two decades. The number of NGOs has been increasing at a rate of about 400 NGOs per year since 2001. There are approximately over 6,000 NGOs in Kenya of which 22% are health-oriented NGOs. lCT use improves the efficiency of business operations in response to pressure from stakeholders and opportunities offered by lCT in improving business processes, among other benefits. The lCT sector has also developed better and more user friendly applications for use in the health- focused organizations. It is important to examine adoption and optimization of lCT in health- focused NGO in light of the challenges commercial organizations have had while adopting lCT. The aim of the study was to propose a framework that will optimize ICT adoption by health focused NGOs. This will contribute to the ongoing efforts of ensuring that NGOs reap maximum benefits from the lCT investments already made. This research also attempted to provide a framework on how these NGOs can re-align the lCT investments already in place and any other future lCT investments. The case study design was used and data collected using primary and secondary data sources with the management at the three management levels (strategic, tactical and operations, that is, SOT levels) in Bomu Medical Centre in February 2012. Data was analyzed using SPSS version 17; content analysis was used for qualitative data while descriptives were used for quantitative data. From the case study, the main lCT tools at the operations level were standby computers, printers, scanners, excel spreadsheets, Hospital Management information system, accounting and payroll software. At the tactical level, management mostly utilized some K'T reports from Hospital Information System. There was also use of other applications such payroll system, accounting system among others. The main weakness was inadequate linking of these lCT systems which led to inefficiencies. The study designed a framework to re- align the lCT tools to optimize adoption of the. lCT systems which was validated using the Technology Acceptance Model of lCT adoption. The most important variables in' lCT adoption was perceived usefulness of proposed systems, improved user friendliness in the new system and positive attitude to the proposed lCT system by the management. Other factors include knowledge of derived benefits, lCT literacy by employees and the targeted community. The study has come up with several proposal on lCT tools to adopt and to realign the current lCT tools using the proposed framework..
- ItemPrototype on Open-Source Storage and Server virtualization(2013-11-13) Munambo, Kisienya M.Most of the SACCO industry is still in its infancy when it comes to the use of technology. This creates two major problems for SACCOs; reduced outreach (ability to reach more people) and reduced sustainability (reduced financial performance). To further understand these problems, the need for automation within SACCOs is classified into three fundamental aspects: How do SACCOs synchronize data with remote offices? How do SACCOs process and manage data at central office and remote locations? How do SACCOs reduce the potential for loss during monetary transactions? In light of the above, this research had a main objective of developing and testing an open-source infrastructure prototype that can be used to virtually host data and applications belonging to different SACCOs. The infrastructure would ensure that data and applications are accessible, secure and highly available. The research further proposed a framework for implementing the prototype that would guarantee data is synchronized in real-time and the chances of loss during monetary transactions are reduced. For purposes of standardization, the prototype was designed in-line with industry standard frameworks. The performance and functionality of the prototype were successfully tested against benchmark data collected from currently implemented off the shelf systems found in FOSA operating SACCOs. Both structured interviews and semi-structured interviews were used to collect data used for benchmarking. The data gathered was from a sample size derived from stratified purposeful sampling strategy. The open-source prototype and framework would provide a means for SACCOs and other MFls that are still using manual systems (e.g. paper based) an opportunity to enjoy benefits of automating their business processes at low cost and complexity. This dissertation also provides direction for SACCO management and IT professionals who seek to derive better retum on investment through a better conceptualization of server and storage virtualization infrastructure and a more business oriented acquisition of this technology.
- ItemOptimizing the Use of Information Systems in Non-Tertiary Institutions in Kenya:(2013-11-13) Kisaka, Michael S.In the 21st Century, it is understood that ICT makes it possible for businesses and organizations to reduce their running costs, increase their capabilities and thus enables them to shape inter-organizational coordination. This is no exception to schools. This research sought to establish the degree to which IS have been utilized in Kenyan high schools as they are a breeding ground for the next generation of decision makers and leaders of a growing economy who ought to be fully equipped to seize the opportunities and the benefits to be realized from the adoption of ICT. The objectives of the study were to: (a) Establish the degree used in high schools within Kenya; (b) Determine what the advantages of IS are in Kenyan High Schools; (c) Determine the challenges faced by Kenyan High Schools that do not have IS in place; (d) Determine what the main challenges of adoption of IS in Kenyan High Schools; (e) Develop a model that can be used in enhancing the adoption and use of IS in Kenyan High Schools. Employing a descriptive survey research, a sample of 20 private and public high schools was drawn from the target population of 195 high schools based in Nairobi and a questionnaire was administered to principals, teachers and computer technicians in the schools. The study found out that adoption and use of IS in high schools in Kenya is yet to be fully realized. A series of hindrances to this adoption include such factors as lack of support from the School Board and other stakeholders; limited funds and untrained teachers. From the findings the study proposes the adoption of a School ICT Board as the critical component tasked to execute the successful implementation of adoption of IS in high schools. Such an undertaking would require concentrated and collaborative efforts from all the relevant stakeholders including the broader school administration, government, donors, Parent-Teacher Associations, teaching staff and non teaching staff. The School ICT Board structure allows for adoption of ICT in school administration and consequently adoption of ICT use in the classroom. This model responds to the myriad of challenges that have been detrimental in the adoption of IS in schools.
- ItemInternet banking acceptable model : evaluating behavioural intentions in the adoption of internet bankingLeornard Wekesa Makokha; Ismail Ateya LukanduThe development and diffusion of new technologies by financial institutions in Kenya can result in a more efficient banking system. This dissertation examines the factors that influence customers of banking institutions in Kenya to adopt new technologies, specifically internet banking. The study reviewed literature in respect of four theories of Information Systems acceptance: the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) by Davis (1986), The Theory of Reasoned Action (TRA) by Fishbein and Ajzen (1975), The Theory of Planned Behaviour (TPB) by Ajzen (1991) and Diffusion of Innovation by Rogers (1995), within the context of internet banking, then formulated a research model. The research was carried through across-sectional survey design which questioned respondents on Internet banking services. The population of study constituted customers of three banks in the Central Business District (CBD) within Nairobi City. Respondents of the study were retails customers. The sample study consisted of 124 respondents. Data collected was analyzed by use of factor analysis, descriptive and correlation analysis. Findings revealed that, adoption of internet banking is significantly influence by ease of use, usefulness, relative advantage, fast access to internet and behavioural control factors. Consequently, the final modified research model called the “Internet Banking Acceptance Model” was validated and found to have the power to explain and predict customer‘s behavioural intentions towards Internet banking in the context of the Kenyan Banking environment.
- ItemThe Framework for quality systems in academic libraries in Kenya: the basis for future information sharing.Gichiri, Peter WanyoikeThe extraordinary developments of Information Technology (IT) profoundly concern libraries which are today experiencing a phase of substantial change. These innovations have changed the image of the library, placing it before a radical transformation Librarians are moving into dramatically different roles as new services are implemented. The most significant transformations in libraries have been the automation of procedures, the realization of online catalogues and the growing presence of non-paper documentation. This study aimed at investigating the extent to which Academic Libraries in Kenya are addressing the ICT guidelines spelt out by the Commission Higher Education (CHE). The study also embarked on establishing whether there is a link between individual library’s systems specifications and the shared requirements among academic libraries in Kenya. The researcher saw this as a means of facilitating for the sharing of bibliographic information among academic libraries. From the research findings, the researcher aimed at designing a framework/model that systematically shows the fundamental steps that a quality library management system project should traverse. The research findings showed that over 87% of the respondents shared their systems specifications. This implied that there was a lot of uniformity within universities libraries in terms of systems specifications. This was supported by the fact all the sampled respondents agreed that academic libraries in Kenya should feel free to share their system specifications. Armed with this statistics, the researcher developed a modified “V model” of systems development which academic libraries in Kenya should adopt in their Integrated Library.
