Abstract
This paper examines the role of the government in providing adequate housing for vulnerable elderly persons. This is conducted by analysing how the Government of Kenya has complied with international law and standards that provide for adequate housing for vulnerable groups, specifically elderly persons. Vulnerable elderly persons for the purpose of this study are those unable to access adequate housing on account of having no family, or having been abandoned by their families, have become homeless.
Description
It is projected that the population of persons aged sixty-five years and above will reach 1.5 billion worldwide by the year 2050.This will be twice as many older persons as children under five.2 The State has taken measures to ensure the rights of older persons are addressed. This is in accordance with the constitutional right of older persons to fully participate in the affairs of society,
to pursue their personal development, to live in dignity and respect free from abuse and to receive reasonable care and assistance from their family and the State.
