Abstract
This research investigates the intricate relationship between FDI and Income Inequality in the East African Community for the period 2000-2023. It has been observed that FDI inflow influences the distribution of income in its member states, including Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Rwanda, Burundi, South Sudan, and the Democratic Republic of Congo. In the process, the research makes a nuanced analysis of the short-run and long-run dynamics, using an ARDL model while controlling for important variables like GDP growth, employment, and sectoral distribution of investments. Results indicate the presence of a long-run equilibrium relationship between FDI inflows and income inequality, though with considerable variation across countries. Employment was always identified to be a major determinant of inequality reduction, especially in Uganda, Democratic Republic of Congo, and Kenya, when employment generation in labour-intensive sectors had the most significant effect. On the other hand, this study also identifies that FDI usually perpetuates inequality when invested in capital-intensive industries or sectors benefiting only the elites, as was noted in some extractive and technology-driven investments. It had mixed implications for GDP growth, as economic gains were sometimes unequally distributed and promoted increased inequality in certain cases. The study underlines that the positive effects of FDI can be reaped without bearing its negative impacts only with well-targeted policy interventions. "This may include encouragement of FDI in labour-intensive industries such as agriculture and manufacturing, progressive tax policies to ensure that the distribution of wealth is equitably made and putting in place social safety nets to protect vulnerable groups.". Besides, the encouragement of regional cooperation among EAC member states to achieve a harmonization of FDI policies and sharing of best practices is highlighted as the route to more inclusive economic growth. This study, through its data-driven insights, sets out to inform policymakers and other stakeholders on how to balance economic development with social equity in the EAC region.
