Abstract
This paper provides an overview of competence development in Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs). The paper suggests a rationale for competence development and highlights the need for reassessing the competence development process as it pertains to SMEs. The paper identifies a model that could be adapted as a framework for understanding such a phenomenon in SMEs generally, and points to the possibility of extending the model.
