- PublicationA Framework to assess the impact of ICT on the livelihoods of students in tertiary institutions: a case of Strathmore UniversityWamicha, Elizabeth; Ateya, Ismail LukanduICT has been considered to influence the livelihood of many people in a number of ways. This has prompted a great number of citizens to take up training in ICT courses so as to harness the supposed livelihood benefits. The research focuses on the impact ICT has on the livelihood of students in tertiary institutions. The study uses the livelihoods model as the conceptual model with vulnerability context, human, social, financial capital of the student and the policies/processes of the tertiary institution as the main variables in developing a framework for the assessment on the impact ICT has on the livelihood of students in tertiary institutions. The developed framework is an extension of the livelihoods model that has been modified to include critical components such us curriculum development, collaboration with industry academic institutions and alumni to overcome the gaps observed that exist within the existing ICT tertiary institution. The administration of the framework is in four parts; the first part is the determination of the vulnerability context within which the student operates; the second part outlines the methods used to maximize livelihood assets of the student; the third part emphasizes on the adjustment of institutional policies and procedures. The fourth part details the incorporation of the livelihood strategies into the tertiary institution and the outcome expected from the framework is strengthened relationships between industry and top universities with increased accountability to stakeholders.
- ItemA model for estimating network infrastructure costs : a case for all-fibre LAN networksMaina, Anthony Mbuki; Ateya, Ismail LukanduThe 21st century is an era that has been characterised by phenomenal growth in data rates at the local area network (intranet), extranet and the Internet. This trend has been pushed by the widespread deployment in organisations of “bandwidth-hungry” applications such as VoIP, security surveillance systems, video conferencing and streaming of multimedia content. Due to demand placed on network resources by these applications and services, physical layer cabling solutions have had to evolve to support faster, improved LAN technologies such as Gigabit Ethernet.Although new network architectures (such as Centralised Fibre networks) address current and long term demands of the modern networking environment, concerns have been raised about its cost viability. The key problem identified in this study was an inadequacy of suitable tools that aid decision making when estimating the cost of a network infrastructure project. Factors of importance in this regard were collected in a survey and used in development of a cost model. The model is aimed at being a tool to assist network planners in estimating LAN infrastructure costs. A network was designed based on two architectures – centralised fibre (allfibrenetwork) and hierarchical star (UTP for horizontal cabling and optical fibre for backbone cabling). Thereafter, cost of implementing these two architectures was calculated using the model. Based on the results computed from the cost model, the all-fibre network (centralised fibre architecture) was found to be more cost effective compared to the hierarchical star network

- ItemA Survey of the State of Dataspaces(International Journal of Computer and Information Technology, ) Ateya, Ismail Lukandu; Shibwabo, Bernard Kasamani; Wanyembi, Gregory WabukeThis paper presents a survey of the state of dataspaces . With dataspaces becoming the modern technique of systems integration, the ach ievement of complete dataspace development is a critical issue. This has led to the design and implementation of dataspace systems using various approaches. Dataspaces are data integration approaches that target for data coexistence in the spatial domain. Unlike traditional data integration techniques, they do not require up front semantic integration of data. In this paper, we outline and compare the properties and implementations of dataspaces including the approaches of optimizing dataspace development. We finally present actual dataspace development recommendations to provide a global overview of this significant research topic .
- ItemAdoption of ICT innovations for reduced TCO and overall capital expenditureAdongo, Mark; Ateya, Ismail LukanduCompared to other industries, the pace of evolution in the field of Information Technology (IT) has been on an ever increasing upward trend for the last decade or more. This evolution can and has been witnessed both in the realms of hardware and software development, the advancements, bringing with them both positive benefits and negative effects. The benefits, in many instances do outweigh the negative effects particularly with regard to acquisition and operating cost, efficiency, effectiveness, resulting impact on end user processes and products, the list is endless. Surprisingly enough, the rate of adoption of these positive ICT innovations in the workplace and business workplace environment has not matched the rate at which the ICT industry has been churning the advancements. Much as the revolution has made it possible to deploy IT solutions at a lower cost, reducing by more than half each year for the same functionalities, statistics collected indicate that industry adoption has not matched the rate of innovation. This research sought to establish the factors that influence the adoption of ICT innovations; and hence propose a framework that can assist organizations match the rate of this evolution with an overall aim or reducing operational costs.A survey that was conducted across five local financial institutions indicated that most respondents felt and did concur with the fact that adoption of ICT innovations did indeed result into reduced total cost of ownership of IT. Results of the study also pointed to the factors that promote the adoption of ICT innovations in the financial institutions and from that, a framework for the adoption of ICT innovations was developed and validated. The framework, if applied in the manner proposed, would go a long way in assisting organizations continuously identify opportunities for reducing overall IT expenditure by embracing industry advancements in ICT that bring along these advantages.
- ItemApplication of structuration theory and activity theory in enterprise resources planning systems implementation for Universities(Computer Technology and Application 3, ) Nyandiere, Clement; Ateya, Ismail Lukandu; Kamuzora, FaustinAn integration of organization culture in the conceptualization and development of enterprise Resource Planning Systems (ERPs) is critical for an organization to reap potential benefits of the system. In this paper, the authors present an analytical approach through the Structuration Theory: How a university can assess its culture for the purposes of design and development of the ERPs. The authors extend the Structuration Theory by integrating it with the Activity Theory to provide the means of evaluating the activities that the system is to perform. The modified Orlikowski model is applied to depict the relationship between institutional properties, human agents, and technology in the university setup and how this offers a more inclusive approach to ERP systems development and implementation.
- ItemCollaborative problem solving using public social network media: analyzing student interaction and its impact to learning process(The Society of Digital Information and Wireless Communications, ) Ateya, Ismail Lukandu; Ballera, Melvin; Radwan, AbdallaThis paper examines the use of social network media at three aspects in African and Libyan perspective. Firstly, to use social network media as an open network learning environment that provide service for interaction necessary for learners to support socialization and collaboration during problem solving. Secondly, to use social media as a tool to support blended learning in e-learning system and encourage non-native English students to express their ideas and fill the gap of communication problems. Thirdly, to analyze the interaction of the learner in social media threaded messages and its relation to group and individual performance using different social schema and social network analyses. Quasi-experimental results indicate that there is an increase on the cognitive level of students at different level while qualitative results reveal that it helps deepen learning, memorable, have freedom to express opinions and lessen pressure and increase communication and socialization.
- ItemConceptual framework for integration of organisation information processing theory and activity theory in enterprise systems implementation(SCIENCEDOMAIN international, ) Nyandiere, Clement; Kamuzora, Faustin; Ateya, Ismail Lukandu; Omwenga, Vincent OImplementation processes of systems in organizations follow different strategies and one of these strategies is to understand the uncertainties associated with the integration of the new system into an existing system environment so as to limit any challenges that may arise during the system implementation. Systems are implemented to address specific organizational needs, that is, activities the organization engages in. This paper explores organization information processing theory (OIPT) and activity theory in enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems implementation. A framework for the ERP implementation has been developed from a conceptual model on the interaction of organizational culture and structure. The modified model incorporates the activity theory and the OIPT and provides a formal way of bringing on board various interplaying variables in the system implementation process, more so for ERP systems.
- ItemEvaluation of the relationship between internet accessibility and students performance: case study of Strathmore University(interesjournals, ) Gathenya, Esther Nyokabi; Ateya, Ismail LukanduPerformance can be described as the level of achievement expressible by an individual, as a relationship of an independent variable. In the educational sector performance can be described as a reflection of the total involvement of a student in the learning environment. It includes social and emotional development, communication skills and participation in the learning activities as well as academic achievement. This research addressed the relationship between internet connectivity and the performance of students. The students found the internet very useful as far as their studies are concerned since they were in a position to access a very wide range of information.
- ItemEvaluation of the use of internet in students' : case study of hostels around Strathmore UniversityGathenya, Esther Nyokabi; Ateya, Ismail LukanduThe research investigates the use of Internet by undergraduate students in Strathmore University with a specific look at availability and use of Internet in their halls of residence.A questionnaire survey is the research method that was used for data collection. Questionnaires were distributed to undergraduate students in six hostels around Strathmore University. The findings of the study reveal that the Internet is not extensively used by undergraduate students in their halls of residence. Students prefer using modems to connect to the Internet since the hostels rarely provide the services. The research also examines the equitable access to the Internet, as students mostly rely on private/commercial Internet cybercafés – both on and off campus – for their access and use. The findings of the research also reveal the need for having Internet services in student’s hostels and the use of the Internet in university for optimal utilization of electronic information sources. The research is useful for those in decision-making roles as it reveals the need for the provision of relevant Internet infrastructural facilities in Kenyan hostels around institutions of higher learning and sustainable access to the Internet by the students to support their academic activities.
- ItemFramework for adopting green IT in KenyaKirimi, Onesmus Mburugu; Ateya, Ismail LukanduGreen IT, also known as green computing, is an umbrella term referring to environmentally sound information technologies and systems, applications, and practices. It refers to supporting business critical computing needs with least possible amount of power or sustainable computing. In Kenya, IT operations have a significant impact on the environment, and organizations have an obligation of minimizing the negatives environmental impact of their IT operations. However, Green IT adoption requires a holistic approach in order to benefit from Green IT initiatives and practices that are increasingly becoming a focus even to government regulators in the developing countries following the signage of the Kyoto protocol in 1997. Organizations lack the understanding of having a holistic and sustainable approach in providing their services while at the same time, being environmentally friendly as they execute their business processes and strategies. This has lead them to having a more keen interest on their bottom lines while forsaking their environmental obligations in a bid to build a sustainable future by embracing green computing initiatives in the core of their business models and strategies. This research gives a perspective to this crucial need and endeavor to provide a localized framework with relation to other frameworks done across the spectrum with similar objectives in a bid to guide organizations towards a greener sustainable future. It has been established evidently from the research that policy factors, attitude and top management support have significant impact on adoption of Green IT within organizations. Moreover, it is indisputable that technology infrastructure can facilitate Green IT initiatives, but it should not be seen as an absolute answer to Green IT adoption, since it is just a tool that drives the initiative. Hence all the critical factors discussed in the validated framework in the research are interdependent and determines the adoption of Green IT initiatives in organizations. In conclusion, it is clear that all IT service providers in the region have a moral and environmental obligation to adopt new innovative Green IT approaches to stimulate the industry to not only become contributors to emission of green house gasses, but to also lead in providing localized solutions that can have impact in a achieving a sustainable environmental future.
- ItemImproving the decision-making process using an information management system(International Journal of Current Research, ) Shibwabo, Bernard Kasamani; Ateya, Ismail Lukandu; Musau, Gloria MeliThe ability to make effective decisions is crucial to an organization’s survival in today’s tumultuous business environment. In order for firms to evaluate alternatives and make informed choices they must have reliable and timely data upon which to make their decisions. Consequently, the development of effective information management techniques is critical. In this research a web-based information management system is developed for better decisionmaking. Two agents are integrated in the system, namely; mapping agent and extraction agent. The mapping agent reduces the workload for users charged with the responsibility of data entry. The extraction agent is designed to aid in the retrieval of current, timely and relevant data, eliminating unnecessary information. The critical information requirements are identified and a prototype is developed for verification. The prototype is developed using PHP language for the system interfaces with GD for providing a graphical reporting supported by a MySQL database. The system is implemented and tested at a Kenyan based Internet Service Provider. As a result, the organization under study increases its sales through improved targeted marketing and monitoring of the outcome. The user load is also reduced by half and the risk of data input errors minimized by 80%.
- ItemIncreasing ubiquity in language learning using WhatsAppAteya, Ismail Lukandu; Wairua, IanIn recent years, web-based e-Iearning, has received great attention as a possible method to increase efficiency and access to both basic and higher education in Africa. While the performance of institutional e-Iearning and learner management systems (LMS) continues to face critical scrutiny, the value proposition of e-Iearning seems to have settled the debate and reduced attention on whet her the continent is ready for networked educational technologies. The attention has shifted from infrastructural and cost issues towards mobile technologies or mobile-enhanced e-Iearning, mainly because of the rapid increase in mobile phone use in the continent, and the persisting problems access and equity. This study sought to investigate the use of Whatsapp mobile social networking application in enhancing ubiquity of teaching and learning within mobile-assisted language learning (MALL). Students were required to use the App to complete group tasks and the times during which these activities were carried out were observed and analysed. The target subjects for the study were university students who are elementary learners of Japanese as a foreign language in an African university. This study combines the findings of the pilot phase of a case study, with on-going background literature review of mobile learning for Africa. The initial results show that Whatsapp enhances ubiquitous learning and provides proof of opportunities for exploiting available mobile Web technologies in an African university setting.
- ItemInformation technology security policy framework for small and medium size enterprises in Nairobi; Muya, Andrew Ndeti; Ateya, Ismail LukanduThe adoption of Information Communication and Technology (I.C.T) has increased tremendously over the last couple of years, especially in Small and Medium Size Enterprises (SMEs). However, most SMEs do not realize the importance of Information Technology (I.T) security policies. This research sought to (a) establish degree of use of I.T security policies in SMEs and whether these policies are equal to the business needs of SMEs; (b) establish the security threats and challenges they are exposed to; (c) identify how the I.T security policies are developed; and finally, (d) propose a framework that can be used to guide SMEs in adoption of I.T security policies. To meet these objectives, the study used a descriptive research design; research instruments used were questionnaires, interviews and discussion forums (with both student colleagues and work mates). The study established that 90% of SMEs in Nairobi do not have I.T security policies in their enterprises. Further, of the 10% who have existing policies, 5.2% have security policies that match the enterprises’ business needs. The study further observed that 82% of the businesses strongly agreed that they are in need of a comprehensive I.T security policy to counter risks / threats. Out of all the respondents, 40% strongly agreed that their businesses regularly and frequently scan critical systems for security exposures. The study further used the size of the organization in terms of personnel, the technical environment of the organization, and the ISO 17799 security policy development methodology to develop a framework that addresses comprehensively the I.T security policy development for SMEs. According to the proposed framework, if the firm is not I.T proficient (or if it is I.T proficient but small), it should outsource I.T security policy development; else, it should develop the I.T security policy internally or outsource. The framework also provides the detailed components of the I.T security policy development and its implementation.
- ItemIntegrated access control security system model (IACSS-M)Mayieka, Jared Maranga; Ateya, Ismail LukanduDefining an Access Control security system service for any organization’s application requires the choice of the access control security model and process for the formulation of access decision rules to be used by the access enforcement mechanism that can be implemented in such organizations. The lack of an integrated access control security system model to provide framework for the development of an access control system for universities has presented enormous challenges to the universities in Kenya. The universities need to monitor, authenticate and verify people entering into and utilizing their resources. Additionally, there is a challenge of integrating different systems and departments thereby leaving a gap in the administration process. There is therefore need to provide a model that would help in providing the benchmark for developing access control systems to integrate different systems and departments in the institutions. Such benchmarks can be guided by technology such as smart cards, rules and policy definition among others. This research aims at designing a policy driven access control model (PD-ACM) that can be used in both developing the access control model and formulating the access decision rules adopted by institutions of higher learning in Kenya to develop their access control systems more specifically for their physical access control. In summary, this thesis aims at developing an integrated access control security system model for universities in Kenya and this process will be guided be Activity, System and Set theories. It is important for institutions to adopt a specific model to guide their access control security system development process so as to be able to effectively, efficiently and reliably monitor, authenticate and authorize all those accessing their facilities and resources.
- ItemIntelli-restore as an instantaneous approach for reduced data recovery timeShibwabo, Bernard Kasamani; Ateya, Ismail Lukandu; Mugoh, LeonDue to the competitive and regulatory pressures and the high demands and dependence placed on data, there is need for higher data availability and a faster means of recovering the data in case it becomes corrupted or lost. Based on results provided on the reasons behind the long / high data recovery times by Kenyan SMEs this paper provides a solution that reduces the data recovery time. In order to solve the problem of high data recovery times, an instantaneous data recovery strategy based on an existing Continuous Data Protection (CDP) architecture is introduced as an important component of a well-rounded backup and recovery strategy. CDP is a disk based backup solution which ensures that data is retrieved at a much faster rate during recovery.
- PublicationModelling dataspace entity association using set theoremsShibwabo, Bernard Kasamani; Ateya, Ismail Lukandu; Wanyembi , GregoryThe development of dataspace support systems is far from reality as individuals and enterprises are faced with the huge challenge of data management. Critical to this is the need to provide a model that represents the relationships between the entities collaborating in a dataspace. A dataspace is a new abstraction and target architecture to data management that does not require up-front semantic data integration. This paper models a dataspace using the set theory with entity mappings. A technique for identity resolution and pay-as-you-go data integration is explained. In order to provide a strong degree of assurance, the authors subject the model to certain real world entities that might form part of a global dataspace.
- ItemRepository integration: the disconnect and way forward through repository virtualization supporting business intelligence(International Journal of Current Research, ) Shibwabo, Bernard Kasamani; Ateya, Ismail LukanduThis paper proposes a presentation-oriented virtualized approach that supports a modern process to merge existing data islands in organizations around the world that results to a merged virtual data repository. The authors explore a variety of data sources and finally present a uniform solution for the common cases. The solution consists of a transparent virtual repository that supports informational intelligence components. By using this approach we not only mask the differences in divergent data repositories but also provide a standard way to access enterprise-wide data. Security is provided through a twotier mechanism. The result is a single database that percolates and draws data residing in incoherent repositories alongside an intelligence layer. In real-time, there is a determination of the available data repositories. In conclusion, we expect users to exploit this platform and be free to filter information based on their requirements so as to come up with an informed judgment.
- ItemStudent academic management mobile application: a case of Strathmore universityAteya, Ismail Lukandu; Makhanu, Everlyne; Balala, Fatma KhalidOver the last decade, Students in higher education around the world have been facing a number of challenges and potential threats to attain academic excellence. The major problem identified in this research was the lack of a solution based on current technology and data infrastructure to provide response to address student challenges. Most of the students face poor time management skills, unavailability of academic records, and lack of communication with lecturers and insufficient bursary' information and last but not least the lack of instant event notification. The dissertation is an applied research which implemented research tools such as observations, interviews and questionnaires with the aim of identifying the common challenges encountered in higher education and thereafter proposing a hi-tech unified solution for the students. The research sample was drawn from Strathmore University students, who were provided with questionnaires. The data collected was used to draw important conclusions for the design algorithm. Control data was collected by interviewing few students from a public university, which doesn't have a technological solution. Eventually a comprehensive review of challenges and current solutions were presented from findings of the survey. The suggestions obtained from the literature review and conclusions of research findings' influenced the design of an academic solution. Hence an android based mobile application was developed to address student challenges in the following sections: Planner, Timetable, Records, Communication and an instant notification service. The prototype application was tested among a few Strathmore students and an acceptance level of 81.5% calculated from findings. The test results showed that the application has improved students time management skills by 25%, enhanced communication by 33% and has improved the students' general performance by a grade difference of 15%. These values are a proof of the positive impact it has on university and college students. The dissertation has systematically identified the student challenges, literature about common architecture and solutions, carried out a survey using questionnaires and interviews, analyzed the results and drew conclusions. Finally a mobile application was designed to fill the identified technological gap and tested to prove its acceptance and effectiveness.
