- ItemAssessment of factors Influencing decision to outsource information and communication technology by Commercial Banks in KenyaMuchai, Edward; Acosta (Dr.), FreddieInformation and communication technology outsourcing is a major part of outsourcing decisions by commercial banks operating in Kenya and has registered a rapid growth recently. The study sought to find out the information systems (IS) functions which were outsourced by the banks and rank the factors influencing IS outsourcing decision according to importance. To achieve this, the study adopted an exploratory in which all the 45 banks in Kenya were studied. The study used self administered questionnaires to collect data, which was analysed using various analytical tool. The study established that commercial banks mainly outsource functions such as systems implementation, network services, software and hardware maintenance, and Automated Teller Machine (ATM) services. The study further established that factors such as cost, desire for quality, size of organization and business strategy, among others, influence the banks' decisions to outsource IS functions to a large extent. The study established that the small banks had a higher level of IS outsourcing as compared to large and medium banks. This is attributed to lack of technical capacity and need to deliver quality service at a minimal cost. The study revealed that operational costs was ranked as number one driver of outsourcing decisions by commercial banks operating in Kenya followed by the desire for quality and organizational size respectively. The study concluded that though cost was the main driver of outsourcing decisions, there existed other factors which were equally important such as desire for quality and business strategy among others.

- ItemExploratory research on IT projects: A case study of Kenya Pipeline CompanyOmondi, Sharon Akinyi; Acosta (Dr.), FreddieThis study was an exploratory research to demonstrate the various constraints that plagued IT projects. The Chaos Report of 2004, a survey carried out by the Standish Research Group, revealed that the 75% of all IT projects fail. 75% of all IT projects that begin, fail. IT projects are usually covered up, not rationalized to find out what went wrong and often the individuals involved are fired without getting to know the real cause of the projects failure therefore minimizing the chances of organizations learning from their mistakes. The study examined the SAP ERP implementation at KPC as its business case, the researcher's demographic was the SAP Implementation Project Team. There were two constraints identified. These constraints greatly influence the success or failure of a project, they are, Business Process Development (user requirements) and Change Management issues, of which only 25% of business process development was carried out and up to 85% of related change management issues are yet to be resolved, even after the project's closure. The use of a performance measures is strongly emphasized to aid, Business Process Development. This measure which was initially intended for organizations, to re-engineer themselves into more effective and efficient lean enterprises, was recommended for adoption in Information Technology projects; in an attempt to gain the positive aspects that lean enterprises are identified with. The researcher adopted qualitative research style, to adequately gauge the respondent's opinions, proving that the my SAP ERP implementation at the Kenya Pipeline Company (KPC) was a successful IT project.
- ItemFormulating value proposition for a java mobile application : a case study for KenyaIrura, Mark Gachara; Acosta (Dr.), FreddieThis research focuses on the value proposition of a Java mobile application (Tex2+) as perceived by end users (customers) and three kinds of business customers – a Kenya government parastatal, a financial institution and a GSM provider. There have been problems previously; firstly, is the issue of expensive costs using short messages. Secondly, there are problems that have existed for mobile developers in the mobile business ecosystem, namely; multiple platforms, lock-in practices, poor alignment of software to business processes and poor market place practices by participants. Thirdly, there is a business model problem; how does one merge economic theory and technology to arrive on a profitable business model? The research observes that a developer can promote his application directly to Kenyan end users – positive network effects lead to more value in the network. But they should not forget to incorporate businesses in their approach to value proposition.

- ItemThe adoption of mobile technology as a tool for situational crime prevention in KenyaMakhanu, Everlyne; Oduor, Collins; Acosta (Dr.), FreddieThe adoption of mobile technology in crime prevention has substantially grown across the world. However, this is not the case in Kenya, because the public still have to go from one police station to another to report crimes and to receive general services from the police. The crime records are usually recorded manually in police Occurrence Book (OB) and therefore determining the accurate crime trends and rates of reported crimes has proved to be a major hurdle in crime prevention for the Kenya police. This study aimed at developing a mobile application that would aid the Kenyan public to report crimes to the nearest police station, receive alerts on new crime spot areas, query information about arrested individuals and encourage community policing. The study also involved the development of a back-end web-based prototype that incorporated a digitised OB and a criminal database. The mobile Android application was tested on various devices and the test results ascertained. The study revealed that most users would use the mobile-police application because of convenience, reduced fear of victimization and ease of use.

- ItemThe Strategic value of business intelligence systems : a case study of GSM companies in KenyaNjuru, Julius; Acosta (Dr.), FreddieThis research is intended to establish why companies especially in Telcom sector have low adoption rates of business intelligence tools already implemented. Telcom industry anywhere in the world is highly dynamic and super competitive. Implementation of suitable business intelligence and performance management tools can potentially tilt companies' competitive edge over competitors. However this seems not to be the case as adoption of business intelligence is still very poor. This research has unearthed various barriers to adoption to business intelligence(BI) and PM(performance management) in GSM companies in Kenya. These barriers are either operational, people and to small extent systems issues. The choice of GSM companies in Kenya was advised by the facts such as , (i) Some of GSM companies have already implemented BI systems, (ii) heterogeneity of various business applications used these companies, (iii) volumes of data generated by numerous processes, (iv) need for predictive analytics by GSM companies to predict trends in the industry and, (v) lack of or insufficient frameworks to fully help adoption BI systems hence increasing strategic value of BI projects. The research revealed an interesting observation that although many managers knew of existence of BI systems at their companies they did not know of its objectives. Also many managers used very few functionalities of BI (business intelligence) system. This clearly inhibits adoption of BI (business intelligence) and due to this it is very hard to establish strategic value of BI (business intelligence). Although management staff believe the BI(business intelligence) can help in increased profit growth, they never attributed growth of their organization to BI (business intelligence). In this consideration of the outcome, organizations need to balance between the effort of BI (business intelligence) implementation process and stimulating use and adoption of the same. To realize fully strategic value of BI(business intelligence) organization need to invest both during acquisition phase and adoption phase at almost equal measure.
