Abstract
The Public Service Vehicle (PSV) investors in Kenya are few but have a great impact on the country‘s economy through employment, taxes and efficiencies to enable the country to move. The gains on the industry over the years cannot be gainsaid having grown from a national government project through the now defunct Nairobi City Council to the hands of individual investors. So sensitive is the sector that the government is very keen on regulation through the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA). But as the government strives to push the PSV investors to move to larger capacity vehicles. It‘s unclear the factors investors consider when it comes to the choice of PSV to invest in, that is why; probably the switch has not taken place. In that regard, this study took to investigate the factors that the investors consider when deciding which type of PSV to invest in. In order to achieve, the study aimed to investigate the social determinants that investors consider when choosing the type of PSV to invest in in Nairobi, the economic determinants that investors consider when choosing the type of PSV to invest in Nairobi and the recommended attractive opportunities for investment in the PSV sector given the established socio-economic determinants that would enable better regulation. This study was based on the need to find out just what influenced the decisions taken by investors in PSVs in Nairobi when determining which investment to go for this study was based on a descriptive approach. This is because we sought to describe which factors were considered by investors when considering which investment to get into. In this study the quantitative information was collected through self-administered close ended questions in a questionnaire distributed to the participants by the researcher. The study identified various factors that the investors relied on and grouped them into three broad categories i. e Economic, Financial and Social Factors. The results ranked the factors and revealed that they all influenced the decisions in various ways. The study found that the Economic and Social factors affected the decisions the most. Based on the findings above the study concluded that social determinant, economic determinant and attractive opportunity influenced the choice of PSV. The study has concluded that social determinants, as seen in in the study, have directly affected the choice of PSV. The investors have to consider the effect of social determinants before making the choice of PSV. The impact of values in a society has greatly influenced the choice of PSV. The study further concluded that economic determinants have an active and direct role in choice of PSV as seen in the study. Economic determinants play a central role to the investors when making the choice of as they define the cost the investors would incur while investing in PSV. When economic determinants are favorable then the choice of PSV will be influenced positively. In addition the study also concluded that attractive opportunity has a direct effect on choice of PSV as seen in the study. The opportunity that is more attractive greatly influences positively the choice of PSV. It makes the investors to be more confident while investing. The study should be able to assist new investors and what to lookout for as well as the regulators on how best to regulate the industry as they will know what the investors look for.
